There's something that I've been trying to figure out
I've been wondering a very long time.
I've thought and I've thought but I just don't know,
Will you help solve this mystery for me?

CHORUS:
Did you ever hear an ant say "hello?"
Does it bark does it squeak, does it moo?
Did you ever hear an ant say "hello?"
Tell me what does an ant say to you?

I saw an anthill as I was walking down the street
The ants were carrying crumbs and bugs inside.
I thought that this would be the perfect time to meet
But they didn't stop to say hello
They walked around my feet.
CHORUS:

I sent an invitation to come to tea
Everyone was welcome I wrote.
Would you be so kind as to RSVP
But they never never never never answered me.
CHORUS:

I wondered how they marched in a line so straight
They never seemed to bump into each other.
Did they have traffic lights 6, 7 or 8
That told them where to go or when to wait?
CHORUS:

We wake up when the bat goes to bed,
Don't ban the bat, don't ban the bat,
He sleeps with his feet up over his head.
Oh, bring back the bat.

CHORUS:
Bring the bat back for the balance of nature,
Bring the bat back to the banks of the stream,
Bring the bat back, there's a bat in your future,
Be batgirl or batboy on the bat's home team.
He flies like a bird but he's more like a mouse,
Don't ban the bat, don't ban the bat,
He can't build a nest so build him a house
Oh, bring back the bat.

The bird eats mosquitoes and so does the bat,
Don't ban the bat; don't ban the bat,
Mosquitoes eat me and I don't like that.
Oh, bring back the bat.

CHORUS:

Build the bat a box and she'll catch a batch of bugs
Don't ban the bat; don't ban the bat,
Raise little bats and give them little bat hugs.
Bring back the bat.

CHORUS:
Bats aren't bad, they're bashful and sweet
Don't ban the bat, don't ban the bat,
And they pollinate bananas for us to eat.
Oh, bring back the bat.

An elephant seal pup is as cute as can be,
So how come its daddy looks so funny to me?
I guess its mommy wouldn’t agree
‘Cause they’re sunning here together beside the salt sea.

Chorus

He can’t be a harbor seal, his nose is too long,
He can’t be an elephant, his nose is too short.
Too short and too long, all in the same song,
And here at Año Nuevo they make their home port.

He looks like a nightmare, but don’t laugh or scream,
Approach him politely because you may seem
As funny to him as he seems to you,
What’s funny all depends upon your point of view.
Chorus

He can’t be a mermaid ‘cause mermaids can sing
And he only bellows at any old thing.
When my daddy’s grumpy, he bellows at me,
But today we’re watching elephants beside the salt sea.

I thought that the dinosaurs were the biggest of them all
But an animal still lives which makes them seem quite small
It would take two of the heaviest dinosaurs
to weigh as much as one blue whale - a-swimming off our shores

(Chorus:)
We’ll never hear the roar of a dinosaur
The only place you’ll see ‘em is inside a museum
It would be a shame if whales end up the same
Don’t let them be the dinosaurs of the sea.

None of our ancestors who lived so long before us
Ever caught a glimpse of the fierce Tyrannosaurus
But I want my great-grand-kids, and their grandchildren too
to still find gentle, noble whales living in the oceans blue

(Chorus)

(Bridge:)
Blubber for oil, and meat for food
Hunted for hundreds of years
Threatened by pollution and injured by boats
Soon they may all disappear

Nobody knows for sure why the dinosaurs disappeared
But if the whales go too, the reasons will be clear
People are the cause, we fill their lives with sorrow
If we don’t change our harmful ways, there’ll be no whales tomorrow.

Well the earthworms dance with a wiggle and a bend
Soil goes in the front and comes out the other end
It comes out the other end and it’s better for the trip
You know the earthworms dance with a slide, slip, slip

It’s the earthworm dance wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
It’s the earthworm dance. Get down
It’s the earthworm dance wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
It’s the earthworm dance. Get down

Well the earth worms dance with a slip, slide, slide
They tunnel through the soil, let the air up inside
You know it’s good for the roots and it’s good for the shoots
And it’s good for all the people who eat the fruits

You know a worm looks simple just a head and a tail
But without the worms all the farms would fail
So let’s hear it for the earthworms all in a coil
You know their dance is deep

Their dance is deep
Their dance is deep
And they elevate the soil

You know earthworms dance with glide and a curve
Worms never get the credit they deserve
You gotta get yourself on best of terms
So come on everybody, let’s dance with the worms

We’re eating up the forest when we eat that burger thing,
We’re eating up the monkeys and the little frogs that sing,
We’re eating up the ocelot, the orchid and the snake,
This meal would give Godzilla a monster bellyache.

CHORUS:
Hold the ketchup, hold the meat,
I’ll find myself another treat
Because a mile or so of jungle
Is a bit too much to eat.

They are cutting down the jungle to let the cattle graze,
But the rainstorms in the tropics wash the naked soil away,
And what is left will bake and harden in the burning sun,
It’s turning trees to desert puts the burger in the bun.

CHORUS

The banks put up the money to cut the forest down,
The owners take the profit and they spend it in the town,
They do not hear the eagle’s cry or see the parrot’s flash,
It’s clear to me they cannot see the forest for the cash.

I’m stuck when I come to one story, the myst’ry of why otters play,
As a scientist I look for reasons for certain behavioral traits.
Could it be just for fun that you play in the sun? I’ve even seen you race.

Chorus:
You go head first and belly down and then you slide into the water.
You go head first and belly down and then you slide ‘cuz you’re an otter.
You don’t have to go to school each day, you stay at home and play,
And you look so cute when you’re covered with clay, and...
Chorus

You’re Mother Nature’s acrobat, the Queen of Rock ‘n Roll.
You make me laugh so hard, I feel it deep in my soul, when...
Chorus

Your antics are amazing and your whiskers mesmerize.
As a big top clown, you should get the first prize, when...
Chorus

Do do do do...and then you slide into the water
And then you slide, ‘cuz you’re an otter,

You’re otterly adorable, I love to watch you play,
Would you be so kind as to show me the way, the way...

Is there a habitat in heaven
For the species that no longer dwell on earth?
When I book a trip on that old gospel ship,
I would like to think the dodo has a berth.
We have cut down the wildwood the sweet waters blessed,
It must be the eighth deadly sin
To tear up creation so the birds have no nest,
I only hope that God will take them in.
I would like to take a walk with the great and little auk,
I would like to see the passenger pigeons fly,
And all the feathered folk who have no home in this world,
I hope they find a home in the sky,

I hope they find a home up above the sky,
I hope they find a home in the sky,
And all the feathered folk who have no home in this world,
I hope they find a home in the sky.

Is there a habitat in heaven
For the species that are still to meet their doom?
When earthly comfort fails for the elephants and whales
Will the pastures of heaven give them room?
Will the great condor glide over on the other side?
Will I still hear the mountain lion roar?
Will warblers be heard with the great speckled bird,
When we meet on that beautiful shore?
Will I watch the dolphins play in that home far away?
Will I meet with the shy chimpanzee?
And if we kill so many of the creatures on this earth,
Will there still be room in heaven for me?

Will there still be room in heaven for you and me?
Will there still be room in heaven for me?
And if we kill so many of the creatures on this earth
Will there still be room in heaven for me?

I glide on by without a sound.
Like dappled light on the ocean floor
I am very easy to ignore.

It should protect me or so I think.

I’d flutter down and touch the ground
If I were a butter, flutter-fly-flutter

When a butterfly’s born
It has no wings
It’s a creepy-crawly caterpillar thing
When the time is right it makes a chrysalis
Where it cuddles up so small
Then comes the sun and it shines down warm
And one day the chrysalis opens wide. And what comes out?
A butterfly!
The butterfly flies into the air
It flutters here and there and everywhere, here and there and everywhere, here and there and everywhere!

Chorus.

Oh, butterflies help the flowers grow
They spread the nectar, don’t you know?
They live in places around the world,
From the jungle to the plain.
Their wings are many colors bright
Purple and blue and orange and white
I love to watch them in the air,
flutter here and there and everywhere, here and there and everywhere, here and there and everywhere!

I like to imagine her swimming around
From Stellwagen Bank to Nantucket Sound.
My sister, my sister, my sister’s a whale in the sea.

My sister’s a whale in the sea.
I’ve a copy of her pedigree.
I picked out a name and my mom sent the cash,
It wasn’t much money for such a big splash;
My sister, my sister, my sister’s a whale in the sea.

My sister’s a whale in the sea,
Swimming so strong and so free.
The money will help people learn about whales,
They know which is whose by the cut of their tails.
My sister, my sister, my sister’s a whale in the sea.

So look on your family tree:
Is there room for a humpback or three?
There’s Mirror and Merlin and Clover and Cloud,
A sister or brother to make you feel proud.
Your sister, your sister, your sister could very well be
A forty-foot whale in the sea.

Verse 1
When I was a young polar bear
The seals were here, there, and everywhere
The winters were so much longer
The summer shorter, the ice much stronger...and so was I, so much stronger
Whaddaya want me to say?
Now I travel farther everyday
Just to find me some food
So please excuse me if I'm in a foul mood...I've got the polar bear blues

Chorus
I've got the polar bear blues
Ain't nothing but a flow of bad news
I've got the polar bear blues
You would too if you were in my polar bear shoes

harmonica break

Chorus

Verse 2
Could you lend me a hand?
Slow down the shrinking of my land
Well what do you know? (crack, crack)
The ice has broke and I'm drifting away on a floe...oh no...watch me go...
So many miles from home
I'm tired, hungry, and alone
You think I got a bad attitude
Well please excuse me if I'm in a foul mood...I've got the polar bear -

The Bali Mynah was a pet of choice
prized for her beautiful singing voice
A small white bird, with a mask of blue
‘Round the island of Bali, she flew

Poaching took its toll, and along with that
clearing forests stole the Mynah’s habitat
From thousands, their numbers swiftly declined -
Only 40 left in the wild

(Chorus:)
She needs room to spread her wings
She needs room to spread her wings
She can’t stand to live in a cage so small
and now there are very few left at all
She needs room - to spread her wings.

So the Bali Mynah was brought to the zoo
It was one of the only things left to do
So she wouldn’t disappear from the face of the earth
But the cages were too small at first -

(Chorus)

Then along came the free-flight aviary
Bringing space to fly to the Mynah of Bali
A place to live and mate and grow
Someday, back to Bali she’ll go -

(Final Chorus:)
She has room to spread her wings
She has room to spread her wings
She won’t be cooped up like the days way back when
and the Bali Mynah are rising again
She has room - to spread her wings.

Then their mem’ry guides them to the very same shore.
They lay their eggs and they don’t have to stay
To watch their babies and show them the way,
They leave them to the sun and their DNA.

Sea turtle memories, moonlight on tropical foam,
The turtles are coming, humming “There’s no place like home,”
Sea turtle memories, weaving their natural spell,
You’ve got a soft spot for somewhere, under that hard old shell.

Is it the taste of the water or the smell of the air
That tells you no, not here, it’s just over there?
Is it the feel of the current or something we can’t understand?
Sea turtle memories, made up of seasons and sand.

Slither like a snake
Wriggle like an eel
Hop like a bunny
How does it feel?

Quack like a duck does
Honk like a goose
Crow like a rooster
Bellow like a moose.

Jump like a kangaroo
Splutter like a whale
Flutter like a butterfly
Crawl like a snail.

Stretch like a tall giraffe
Buzz like a bee
Climb like a monkey
Up into a tree.

Swim like a catfish
Underneath the sea -
And if YOU were an animal,
What would you be?
Yes, if you were an animal
What would you be?

I sing of the desert, the dirt is so clean, the air is so fair,
The folks are not mean, cause there’s no people there.

I sing of the desert, the snakes and the toads, they’re used to the clime.
If they keep off the roads, they live a long time.

I sing of the desert, the nights are so clear, the air is so still,
You can reach for a star whenever you will.

I sing of the desert, it’s ample and wide, and that’s where I’ll stay,
And that’s where I’ll hide, and that’s where I’ll bide,
Till the tide of the cities passes away.

(Chorus:)
I lead a double life (I lead a double life)
First in the water and then on the land
I lead a double life (I lead a double life)
I am an amphibian.

I’m a cold-blooded creature so I like to stay warm
I’m born in the water and then I transform
Metamorphosis is the name of this change
from gills to lungs, you know my parts rearrange

(Chorus)

The very first animals that swam in the sea
adapted to survive, changing gradually.
It took millions of years until they walked on the earth
But this story is re-told with each amphibian birth

(Chorus)

(Bridge:)
[spoken: Who are these amphibians, anyway?]
There’s the Harlequin frog, with its brilliant yellow spots
Caecilians look like worms, and they can tie themselves in knots
The giant salamander can grow up to 5 feet long
and the Narrowmouth Toad sings a wailing song -

(Instrumental of Chorus)

I breathe and I drink through my delicate skin
which may help explain the mess that I’m in
The poisons people put in the water and air
They end up in me, so I get more than my share

(Chorus 2:)
I lead a troubled life (I lead a troubled life)
with pollution in the water, and trash on the land ...

We’re watching the forests go up in smoke
We’re losing our homes and it’s making us croak
So leap to the cause, it’s time to hop to it
If you don’t help out, tell me who’s gonna do it?

(Chorus 3:)
I lead a troubled life (I lead a troubled life)
with boats in the water, and malls on the land ...

(Chorus)

Hop like a frog onto a rock,
Hop like a frog, it's time to talk.
"Ribid, ribid," it likes to say,
Hop like a frog, every day.

CHORUS:
Clap your hands and jump up high
Kick your knees up to the sky
Clap your hands and jump up high
Kick your knees and try to fly.
Waddle like a duck, "quack, quack, quack"
Waddle like a duck with feathers on your back.
Through the grass down to the lake,
Waddle like a duck, shake, shake, shake.

CHORUS:
Fly like an eagle, up you go,
Fly like an eagle, now go slow.
Over trees and under stars,
Fly like an eagle wherever you are.

(Chorus:)
Venom! Venom!
It’s gonna get you if you don’t watch out!
Venom! Venom!
And if it gets you, then you’ll scream and shout! [Aaahhh!]

A stone fish looks like a slimy stone.
It floats very still and all alone.
The only clues are two red eyes
watching for prey to swim on by.
If you mistake that fish for a rock,
your heart will stop like a broken clock.
Venomous spines hidden in their skin
will make you wish you’d never stepped in -

(Chorus)

Mice and other rodents make
a very good dinner for a rattlesnake.
Paralyzing prey is venom’s role.
Then the snake will swallow the rodent whole.
If you taunt snakes, they will bite,
but leave them alone and you’ll be all right.
Venom helps animals stay alive.
We all need to find a way to survive -

(Chorus)

If you see some bullet ants
don’t let them get inside your pants.
They’re really big and awfully mean
and their stingers cannot be seen.
A black widow spider is very shy.
She’ll hide in a can, munching on a fly.
If you bug her, she’ll attack
and sting you with her venomous sac.

(Chorus)

Venomous creatures big and small
have the right to live just like us all.
Spiders eat bugs and snakes eat mice,
maintaining the delicate balance of life.

(Chorus)

Walk lightly on the earth, my friend,
Walk lightly on the earth,
Take care with every step, my friend
Walk lightly on the earth

People can do wondrous things
With dreams that touch the skies
Symphonies, discoveries, enriching all our lives
Yet people can’t bring back the animals that are gone
There’s a fragile balance to maintain
And as we do, let us

Chorus

Habitats are vanishing, endangering the lives
Of the humpback whale, the chimpanzee, the eagle souring high
So the children of our children can know the wonders of these
In our work and in our play, let’s all remember to

Walk lightly on the earth, my friend,
Walk lightly on the earth,
With carbon footprints light as air,

I wanna go to a party and howl at the moon
‘Cause howlin’ is really hip.
I wanna learn to howl like the big kids howl,
But all I can do is “yip.”
I wanna go ah-oooo, ah-ooooo...

I hear my mommy and my daddy sing
And it sounds so long and cool.
I throw back my head and land flat on my back
And you know I feel like a fool.
I wanna go ah-oooo, ah-oooo...

Bridge
When my mom and dad howl, you’d think it’s a pack
‘Cause they get the intervals right,
And the overtones sound like wolves enough
To fill up the arctic night.

Well, I went to a party with all of my friends
And we sang till the break of day.
I fell on my back, but everyone did
And that made me feel okay,
Now I can go ah-oooo, ah-oooo...

If you want to howl, just take a deep breath,
Close your eyes and throw your head back,
You don’t need a moon, don’t need to stay on tune.
You can howl like one of the pack,
Yeah, you can go ah-oooo, ah-oooo...
